Anbar Province, the infamous Al Anbar, is a place where all Hell breaks loose. There's an old joke about this area: 'How did Saddam Hussein control the Al Anbar?' The punchline is simple... 'He didn't.' This part of Iraq is unforgiving, and the people here are unlike the rest of the country. They are dedicated, deeply rooted, and very strong in their beliefs. It's important to clarify that not all are bad; they are just not accustomed to change. This book about Marines chronicles the true story of a Marine Corps Battalion that secured this region from February to October in 2005. We entered an area that hadn't seen US troops since the invasion two years prior, giving ample time for the enemy to embed into the cities and funnel insurgents and weaponry from Syria. Our Company alone was putting up statistics comparable to the Vietnam War. To my knowledge, our Company is still the hardest hit unit of all the Iraq War. This book was written primarily to tell our story and to honor the fallen. It's also for other Veterans who have endured similar experiences, to reassure them that their feelings are normal, real, and that they are not alone. I wrote this memoir to reach out to our Veterans in search of help. Finally, this book hopes to assist families and friends of combat Veterans in understanding us and where we are coming from. All of the events depicted in this Iraq deployment memoir are 100% true.
